Mimesis by NeuroPhonetics

Last updated: October 30, 2026

Mimesis has no server of its own, and NeuroPhonetics does not collect or store your data from it. There is no account to make, no advertising, no analytics and no automatic crash reporting. What you listen to, click, record or write stays on your phone unless you send it somewhere yourself.

That is the whole of it for most people. But a few features you start yourself do send something away — to another company, to another of our apps, or to us as an email — and a page that only said "nothing leaves" would be wrong. So:

The ordinary path — everything happens on this phone. You listen; the subtitles are the ones that came with the video, the podcast or the file, or a subtitle file you added. The pronunciation dictionary (IPA) is inside the app and needs no connection at all. Your clicks, memos, sentences, saved words, review progress and statistics are written to this phone's private storage. None of it is sent anywhere, to us or to anyone else.

The one path that sends your audio away — "Subtitles made online". A podcast episode or an audio file with no transcript can be transcribed, and no phone can do that well, so the audio is sent to AssemblyAI or Groq — whichever you chose — with your own API key. It is off unless you set a key, it never starts without you confirming it for that item, and NeuroPhonetics never sees the audio, the transcript or the key. Section 4 says exactly what is sent. If you never turn it on, no audio ever leaves this phone.

What you choose to hand to our other apps. Narrow IPA and "Practice in Antiphon" pass text or a clip to Phonema or Antiphon, our other apps, whose servers process it and forget it. Section 6 says exactly what.

What you choose to send us. A problem report is an email you send from your own email app to , only when you press send. Section 11 says how long we keep it.

What you choose to copy. Your clicks can be written to your own Google Drive, to a folder you pick, or handed to another of your own devices over your own Wi-Fi. That is your Drive and your folder, under your own account. Section 5 says what is in the file.

1. Who we are

Mimesis is made by NeuroPhonetics LLC, a limited liability company registered in the State of Minnesota, United States (https://NeuroPhonetics.com) — the company behind every program in this family and the seller on Google Play. This policy covers Mimesis from Google Play.

2. What we collect

Mimesis itself sends us nothing. There is no Mimesis server — not a log, not a queue, not a database — and the app contains no advertising, analytics, tracking or crash-reporting code that sends anything; the crash and error record in section 3 stays on your phone. NeuroPhonetics does not sell or share any information about you, what you watch or listen to, your recordings, or your notes.

Three things can reach us, and only when you start them:

The only thing outside the app that knows anything about you is the store you bought it from: see section 8.

3. The ordinary path: what stays on your phone

Your library (YouTube items, podcast subscriptions, audio files you add), listening progress, captions and subtitles, clicks and memos, saved words, review schedule, listening statistics and settings are stored in the app's private storage on this device.

A subtitle file you open for an item — including a YouTube item — is copied into the app's private storage with that item, shown below the player, and used for your clicks. It travels only where your clicks and backups already go (section 5); Mimesis never sends it to YouTube or to us.

The pronunciation table (broad IPA) is part of the app: the family's one table, shipped in our shared NeuroPhonetics kit and written by the engine of Phonema, our IPA app, from the word list of the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary (© Carnegie Mellon University; its license is in the app's Licenses page). It is unpacked once on the phone when you turn the IPA line on, answers from the phone and asks nothing of any service, ever.

A spoken memo becomes text, and only the text is kept — on the phone. No recording of your voice is stored. The words are recognized on the phone, by Android's own on-device speech recognizer; your voice is never sent anywhere — not to us, not to Google, not to anyone. If your phone has no on-device recognizer for your language, the microphone button is dimmed ("Not available offline on this device") and you can type the memo instead. Your voice is never sent to us, and never to the transcription services in section 4 — those take the audio of the item you are listening to, never a recording of you.

If the app crashes or hits an error, it keeps a short technical record of it — what failed and where in the code, the app and Android versions, and the time, with no text, words, books, recordings or file names of yours — on your device only, in storage that is not backed up; it is never sent automatically, and leaves your device only if you choose to send it in a problem report you can read first.

Android's own cloud backup and phone-to-phone transfer are switched off for this app's private data, because it holds sign-in and service tokens that should stay on one phone. Use the app's own backup to move to a new phone.

4. Subtitles made online: the one time your audio leaves the phone

This is off by default and stays off until you add a key of your own in Settings → Subtitles → "Subtitles made online". Then, and only when you confirm "Make subtitles" for a particular item:

For the Google Play data declaration this is a user-initiated transfer of audio to a third party, not collection by us, and it is declared as such.

5. Google Drive, and a folder you choose

Clicks and memos live on the phone. You can also keep them in one or more of these places, each of them yours:

What travels in the clear. The six-digit code never leaves your devices. The household key travels only once, encrypted, when you pair two devices. After that, your clicks, memos and settings travel between paired devices signed, but not encrypted, inside your home network, so pair and sync only on a network you trust. Any device on your Wi-Fi can also see that Mimesis runs on this device, its name, maker and model, and whether Pro is on: that is how your devices find each other.

What is in clicks.json: for each click, the moment in the recording, the title and address of what you were listening to, the sentence around that moment when a transcript was available, your memo if you wrote or spoke one, and the review schedule. Since version 1.38.0 your saved words travel in the same file — each word, its sentence, its meaning, its list and its review schedule — so your words reach your other devices the same way your clicks do, and only there: your own Drive, the folder you picked, or your own devices on your Wi-Fi. Since version 1.50 the same file also carries your listening progress and places, a per-device listening history, your settings, and each device's random id, name and model, so your devices can pick up where another left off. That is what travels; nothing else does.

Mimesis keeps to itself. Mimesis from Google Play exchanges nothing directly with any other app on your phone — not with another copy or version of Mimesis — except the hand-offs to our other apps in section 6, which you start yourself. Your clicks reach your other devices only the ways described above: your own Google Drive, a folder you pick, or your own Wi-Fi. Any copy or version of Mimesis that uses the same Google Drive account or the same folder reads and updates the same clicks file there.

6. Services Mimesis contacts

Besides section 4, the app talks directly to these, from your phone, only for the feature you use. Each receives your request as it would from any app or browser, under its own privacy policy, and NeuroPhonetics receives no copy:

Hand-offs to our other apps — only when you start them. These pass through the other app on your phone, then to that app's server, which processes the request and forgets it: our servers store no text, audio or clips, and their logs record sizes, never content.

In Mimesis from Google Play these hand-offs come with Mimesis Pro; until you have Pro, none of them runs and nothing is handed over.

What happens in Phonema, Antiphon or Semantica is also covered by that app's own privacy policy.

7. Supervised and shared devices

A device supervised with Family Link can sign in only to its own Google account, so it cannot put its clicks into a parent's Drive. That is why the folder route in section 5 exists: a folder synced by another app, or Wi-Fi between two devices at home, needs no shared Google account. The app never quietly withholds a feature because of how a device is managed; if something cannot work it says so.

8. The store you bought it from

Mimesis (Google Play): Google Play handles the download, updates and any purchase, under Google's privacy policy. For a purchase we would receive the order details Google gives developers — order number, product, date, country — and use them only for accounting, refunds and taxes. If you let your phone share usage and diagnostics with developers, Google Play may show us aggregated crash and performance statistics, which contain none of your content.

9. Permissions

10. Security

App data is protected by Android's app sandbox. Access tokens and API keys (Google, Readwise, AssemblyAI, Groq) are encrypted with the Android Keystore on this phone and are never part of backups, exports or Google Drive copies. Mimesis's own connections — to Google, Readwise, AssemblyAI, Groq, the Podcast Index, the Apple Podcasts directory, LibriVox and NASA — use HTTPS. A podcast feed or audio address you add yourself is fetched the way its publisher serves it: if its address begins with http://, that request is not encrypted, and anyone on the network between you and the publisher could see which feed or episode you fetched. Mimesis tries the encrypted address first. The Wi-Fi transfer between your own devices (section 5) stays inside your home network, signed but not encrypted after pairing.

11. Keeping and deleting your data

Nothing of yours rests on any server of ours: Mimesis has none, and the Phonema and Antiphon servers forget what they process. On the phone, your data stays until you delete it:

Problem reports. Report a problem opens the report in your own email app. You see the whole thing before you send it, and the log it includes has email addresses, tokens and file paths removed. Nothing is sent unless you press send, and it arrives as an ordinary email from you to — there is no reporting service behind it. Because it is an email, it also carries your email address and whatever your email provider adds. We use it only to find and fix the problem and to write back to you — never for advertising, never sold, never shared. It is kept in our mailbox until the problem is resolved, and deleted then, at the latest 12 months after it arrived; a suggestion is kept the same way. Ask and we delete yours sooner.

Logs from your other devices. A problem report can include the problem and crash logs of your devices paired with this one over Wi-Fi — a TV, a tablet or another phone — so that a device without an email app can be reported from your phone. The phone asks them over your own Wi-Fi, signed with your devices' shared key; a device that is not paired, or that you switched off under Devices, is never asked, and Mimesis TV pairs only with Mimesis from Google Play. Each log is cleaned on the device it comes from in the same way as this phone's, goes only from your device to your device, and is in the report you read before you send it. Keep logs for (7, 30 or 90 days; 30 until you choose) sets how long these logs are kept on this phone and on your paired devices.

Apart from those emails, NeuroPhonetics holds no data about you, so we cannot recover lost data, and there is nothing else for us to delete, correct or export on request. That is the point of this page, not an excuse.

12. Your rights

Depending on where you live — under the GDPR in the EU and UK, or state laws such as the CCPA in California — you have rights over your personal data. NeuroPhonetics holds no personal data from Mimesis apart from problem reports you email us (section 11), does not sell personal data and does not "share" it for advertising. For data held by a service you connected yourself (Google, Readwise, AssemblyAI, Groq), contact that service.

13. Children

The app is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their data. Younger children should use it with a parent or guardian. The app sends nothing to us by itself at any age.

14. If a paid version ever exists

If a paid version is sold, the record a payment requires is the only data of yours that would ever rest on a server, and this page will say what it is before it does. There is no payment today and nothing of the kind is collected.

15. Changes

We may update this policy; the date above shows the latest version, and important changes will be shown in the app.
