Terms of use — Phonema
Last updated: October 30, 2026
These terms are between you and NeuroPhonetics LLC, a limited liability company registered in the State of Minnesota, United States (https://NeuroPhonetics.com), the maker of the Phonema app for Android. Using the app means accepting them and the privacy policy. Questions: .
1. What Phonema is
Phonema writes American-English pronunciation in the International Phonetic Alphabet: broad or narrow, syllable by syllable, with stress marked, and exports it as a PDF, text, audio or video. It is a study tool.
2. Who may use it
You must be at least 13 years old. If you are under 18, read these terms with a parent or guardian. You need a device that meets the app's requirements and, for narrow IPA, linking, the syllables mode for subtitles and the PDF, a connection to the Phonema service.
3. Your license
You may install and use Phonema on the devices you own or are allowed to use, for your own study or teaching. You may not resell it, take it apart to rebuild it as another product, or present its output as the work of someone else's dictionary. Open-source and data licenses of parts of Phonema are shown on its Licenses page and apply to those parts.
4. Your text is yours, and we keep none of it
What you type, paste or share into Phonema stays yours. Sending it to the service gives us no claim over it: we use it to answer that one request and keep nothing — not the text, not the words you fixed in My words, not an export. What you may lawfully paste into the app is your responsibility: if a passage is someone else's copyright, the rules of that copyright still apply. The privacy policy says the rest in detail.
5. What you may export
The transcriptions Phonema produces are yours to use, print, teach from and publish. Exports carry a short line, "Made with Phonema · NeuroPhonetics.com"; you may remove it from your copy.
6. The service
Narrow IPA, linking, the syllables mode and the PDF are made on a NeuroPhonetics service. We try to keep it available and quick, but we do not promise that it is always up, and we may change, pause or stop it — for example while it is being repaired or replaced. Nothing in the app is lost when that happens; narrow IPA, linking, the syllables mode and the PDF simply have to wait; broad IPA keeps working on the phone.
7. No guarantee of results
Phonema follows the pronunciation rules of American English and a dictionary of ordinary words. Pronunciation varies by person, region and mood; a name, a foreign word or a specialist term may come out wrong, and a word no dictionary in the service lists comes back with no transcription rather than a guess — your own entry in My words is the place to fix it. Use your ears as well. Phonema is not a substitute for a teacher, it is not speech therapy or any other health service, and it makes no promise about your progress.
8. Phonema Pro
- What it is. Phonema Pro is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. It unlocks the Pro features in the version of Phonema you have: narrow notation and linking, the full PDF, word list and subtitle file, audio, VLC and video exports, syncing your work in from your other devices, and the hand-offs from our other apps. The free version keeps everything it has. Without Pro, a PDF holds the first 1,000 characters and a subtitle file the first 10 minutes; your own backup stays free.
- Where it is sold. Through Google Play, which is the seller. Google Play's terms and refund rules apply, including any right to cancel that the law where you live gives you.
- What it is not. It is not a promise of future features, updates or support. What Phonema Pro unlocks stays unlocked for that purchase. If we ever add something with its own running cost — a cloud voice, for example — we may offer it separately; it will never take away what Pro already gave you.
- Restoring. Pro follows your Google account: restore it on another device from Settings.
9. Updates and ending
We may update Phonema, change features, or stop offering it, and we do not promise that it will keep working on future versions of Android. You may stop using Phonema at any time by uninstalling it. We may end your license if you use the app to break these terms or the law.
10. No warranty
Phonema is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement.
11. The limit of what we owe
To the fullest extent the law allows, NeuroPhonetics LLC is not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for lost data, and our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of what you paid for Phonema in the 12 months before the claim or US$10. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow to be limited, and nothing removes rights that the law where you live gives you as a consumer.
12. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Minnesota, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes go to the state or federal courts located in Minnesota, except that either side may use small-claims court. If you are a consumer, you keep any mandatory protection of the law of the country where you live.
13. General
These terms and the privacy policy are the whole agreement about Phonema. If a part is invalid, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a part is not a waiver. Suggestions you send us may be used freely. If a translation differs from the English version, the English version applies.
14. Changes and contact
If these terms change, the date above changes and the new text appears in the app and at NeuroPhonetics.com; important changes are shown in the app. Continuing to use Phonema after a change means accepting it.
