Terms of use and safety — Antiphon

Last updated: October 5, 2026

These terms are between you and NeuroPhonetics LLC (https://NeuroPhonetics.com), the maker of the Antiphon app for Android. Using the app means accepting them. Questions: .

1. What Antiphon is

Antiphon cuts a recording of a speaker into sentence and word clips, plays them back in ways that make English rhythm audible, and compares your own repetition with the original. It is a study tool for pronunciation.

2. Who may use it

Anyone over 13, or younger with a parent's agreement.

3. Use it safely

4. Your licence

You may install and use Antiphon on the devices you own, for your own study or teaching. You may not resell it or take it apart to rebuild it as another product.

5. The recordings you add are your responsibility

Add only recordings you are allowed to use: your own, ones you have bought or been given, ones published for free use, or ones whose rights allow copying for private study where you live. The same goes for audio or text another app hands to Antiphon — one of our apps, such as Mimesis, Lectio, Phonema or Semantica — or that you share into it.

Antiphon does not check where audio comes from. It cannot tell a recording you made from one you have no right to, and it does not try: whether you may use a recording is your responsibility. Before the first lesson the app asks you to confirm this, once.

Lessons are for your own, personal practice. Do not share, publish, sell or upload a lesson, its clips or the shadowing track made from them; they are copies of somebody's voice made for your study, and nothing more.

The service does not keep your recording. It is cut into clips in a working area that exists for that one build and is destroyed as soon as the app has collected the lesson — an hour at the outside if your phone never comes back for it (see the privacy policy). The lesson is then on your phone and nowhere else, which means two things for you: it is yours to keep for as long as you have the right to, and it is yours to delete. Deleting a lesson in the app removes every clip of it; there is no copy of it on any server of ours to ask about.

You must not use Antiphon to copy, republish or distribute somebody else's recording. If you no longer have the right to hold a recording, delete the lesson.

We cannot remove a lesson from your phone and we hold none to remove, so there is nothing for us to take down; we may refuse service to anyone who uses the app to redistribute other people's work.

6. Your voice

Your attempts are compared and deleted in the same request; nothing of your voice is kept, sold or used to train anything. The same is true of the clip the attempt is compared against, which the app has to send with it because the service holds no lesson. Recording other people without their agreement is your responsibility, not ours, and in many countries it is unlawful.

7. The service

Cutting and scoring happen on a NeuroPhonetics server, which stores nothing: it is a workshop your phone sends work to. We try to keep it available, but we do not promise it is always up, and we may change, pause or stop it. A service cuts only so many recordings at once and will ask you to try again shortly when it is full — and because it holds no lessons, there is no limit on how many you may keep. That limit is your phone's storage, and the app says what each lesson weighs.

If the service is unreachable, everything already on your phone still works: the clips, the slow copies, the sentences and the words are files. Only the rhythm copies you have not played yet, dictation, the notes on connected speech and scoring an attempt need it.

8. No guarantee of results

Scores, advice and the notes about connected speech come from automatic speech recognition, which is not a teacher's ear. A short clip, a noisy room or an unusual voice will produce a poor score that means nothing about your pronunciation. Antiphon reports; it does not grade, and it promises nothing about your progress.

9. Purchases

Where Antiphon is paid for through Google Play, Google is the seller and their refund rules apply. Where it is bought from NeuroPhonetics.com, the terms of that sale are given at the time.

10. No warranty, and the limit of what we owe

Antiphon is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, NeuroPhonetics is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, and our total liability is limited to what you paid for the app. Nothing here removes rights the law where you live gives you and does not allow to be removed.

11. Ending

You may stop using Antiphon at any time by uninstalling it, which removes the lessons and your practice record with it — there is nothing of yours on the service to clear up. We may end your licence if you use the app to break these terms or the law.

12. Law

The law of the place where NeuroPhonetics is established governs these terms, without removing the protection of the law where you live.

13. Changes and contact

If these terms change, the date above changes and the new text appears in the app and at NeuroPhonetics.com. Continuing to use Antiphon after a change means accepting it.
